permeable axes
This project follows an idea of creating
permeable axes. We pulled the project
away from the property lines to open
up the “alleys” that provide outdoor
gathering, marketing, and resting space
for the public. This idea stems from the
alleys commonly seen in the Mission
District where pedestrians can just flow
in from the main road and be surrounded
by murals and local shops.
The project
consists of two parts, two L-shapes that
frame a courtyard in the middle. The
one on the alleyway side has programs
dedicated to the general public, including
outdoor markets, a cafe, a community
room, and a gallery. The one on the
street side has an auditorium that can
be accessed from the ground floor. The
upper levels house other programs such
as studios, exhibition spaces, and cafes.
